Months of training have just passed, and you're ready to dive into the Ultra Trail adventure. Whether you're a seasoned runner or a determined newbie, how you pack your bag and gear will make all the difference in nailing your race.

Find all our tips to efficiently pack your bag for an ultra trail!

Check the mandatory gear required by the organizer

The list of mandatory gear is provided by the race organizers. It's super important to check it out, because missing any item can get you disqualified and stop you from starting your race. Take this list seriously—it’s there to keep you safe throughout the whole event.

For ultra trails, you often find: a headlamp with spare batteries, waterproof jacket with hood minimum 10K/10K, a hydration system, etc. Everything can change depending on the weather and the plans set by the organizers (extreme cold or heatwave). As your race approaches, stay alert and tuned to communications from the organizer.

Anyway, even if the mandatory gear list is a good starting point to help you choose your equipment, it's important to list the gear you'll need based on your habits and the weather conditions.

It's important to leave nothing to chance. In trail running, especially ultra, nothing ever goes as planned; the more meticulous and careful you are, the better you'll handle the unexpected. The key to your success is anticipation and organization.

Anticipation, organization

Choosing your gear is crucial. A well-fitted and comfortable trail pack is essential to carry your equipment and supplies during the race. Look for a pack that’s light but durable, with plenty of pockets to organize your stuff efficiently.

Your choice of clothes can make all the difference during an ultra trail. Go for technical breathable clothes that wick moisture and dry quickly, keeping you dry and comfortable even on the steepest climbs and changing weather conditions. Favor lightweight and stretchy materials for optimal freedom of movement.

Safety must always be a priority when trail running, especially ultra trail, especially when you're running on isolated and rough terrain. Even if the organizers provide zones for medical care, make sure to bring a first aid kit including bandages, compresses, adhesive tape, painkillers, and any other necessary medication.

We can't say it enough: no testing on race day! Nutrition, bag, clothes, shoes, everything must have been tested multiple times.

Packing your bag well means organizing it methodically so you have everything you need within reach without it bothering you while you run. Put the mandatory gear you probably won't use at the back (survival blanket, long-sleeve shirt, waterproof gloves and pants) and at the front, hydration, nutrition, Eco cup, etc.

By carefully preparing your gear for an ultra trail, you'll maximize your chances of success and safety on the trails. With the right equipment and thorough preparation, you'll be ready to take on the ultra trail challenge and push your limits like never before. Have a great race!
