Trail running is a unique experience, but to maintain optimal performance it also requires good hydration management. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced runner, hydration plays a crucial role.

Every runner has different hydration needs, influenced by factors such as weather, effort intensity, and sweat rate. Before starting your trail, assess your thirst level and anticipate your water needs based on the duration and intensity of your run.

Invest in a water bottle or a hydration pack suited to your needs. Hydration packs often offer extra storage capacity to carry flasks or bladders. Make sure your gear is comfortable and well-fitted to avoid discomfort and chafing.

Adopt a regular hydration strategy

Rather than waiting until you’re thirsty, adopt a regular hydration strategy by drinking small amounts of water every 15 to 20 minutes. This helps maintain optimal hydration levels and prevents dehydration, which can lead to decreased performance and even health issues.

Quick tip: if you use a smartwatch, some models offer small alerts, perfect to remind you it’s time to hydrate or eat!

Supplement with electrolytes

When you sweat during a trail run, you lose not only water but also essential minerals like sodium, potassium, and magnesium. Include electrolyte drinks in your hydration strategy to restore your body’s balance and prevent cramps, for example.

If races offer aid stations along the route, plan your water supply strategically. Take advantage of these stops to refill your flasks, but don’t wait until you’re completely dehydrated to stop. Outside of races, don’t hesitate to carry an extra flask or plan your route considering water points (fountains, villages, cemeteries, shelters). In any case, it’s better to start with too much water than not enough; dehydration can happen very quickly. A trail run, mountain or not, is not something to improvise. Safety is key, and never running out of water is essential.

Hydrating during a trail run (and also after your outing) is crucial to maintain optimal performance and prevent dehydration risks. By adopting a proactive hydration approach, knowing your individual needs, and integrating effective strategies, you’ll be able to fully enjoy your run.
