A waterproof jacket blocks water (steady rain) and wind thanks to a technical membrane. A windbreaker, lighter, protects only against wind or a passing drizzle. It does not replace a waterproof jacket for the mountains or long distances.

For long distances, opt for a lightweight, breathable, and compact trail-specific rain jacket.
