Ultra trail : le matériel obligatoire et nos conseils pour bien s’équiper

Why is ultra-trail equipment compulsory?

An ultra-trail is an extreme adventure: long distance, unpredictable weather, technical terrain... There's no question of setting off haphazardly! That's why the organisers impose a list of compulsory equipment to ensure your safety and that of the other runners.

Failure to comply with these rules could result in a penalty or even disqualification. So it's best to be well prepared!

The Essential Equipment Checklist

The trail pack : your indispensable ally

Capacity: minimum 5 to 18 litres to carry all your gear

Ultra-light and snug-fitting to prevent chafing

Compatible with a hydration system (flask or water bag)

Choose a trail bag with several accessible pockets so that you can easily manage your supplies and water while running.

Waterproof jacket: essentiel protection

·        Standard: minimum 10,000 mm Schmerber to keep you dry

·        Breathable to avoid sauna effect in the rain

·        Compact and lightweight so you don't have to take up too much space

💡 A good waterproof jacket can make the difference between a successful race and an ordeal in the rain.

Lighting: seeing and being seen

·        Headtorch with a battery life of at least 5 to 10 hours

·        Spare batteries required

·       Hydration and nutrition: avoid running out of fuel

·        Minimum 1 L of water required (flexible flasks or water bladder)

·        Energy bars, gels and compotes to keep you going over the distance

·        Electrolytes to prevent cramps and maintain energy levels

Compulsory safety equipment

·        Survival Blanket : to protect you in the event of prolonged downtime

·        Whistle: often included in the bag, essential in case of trouble

·        Mobile phone: battery charged and emergency numbers registered

·        Trail poles (if authorised): useful when climbing to save your legs

Recommended equipment (not compulsory, but very useful!)

·        Thermal clothing : to avoid hypothermia if the weather turns bad

·        Hats and Gloves : en altitude, le froid peut être brutal même en été

·        Anti-chafing cream: prevents chafing and blisters over long distances

·        Blister dressings: don't let a small injury spoil your run

How do you choose your equipment?

Test all your gear in training: there's nothing worse than a jacket that rubs or a bag that doesn't fit properly in the middle of a race.

Optimise weight: every gram counts on an ultra, so choose lightweight, high-performance equipment.

·        Check the weather forecast before setting off and adapt your equipment accordingly.

An ultra-trail is a unique... but demanding adventure. The right equipment can make the difference between finishing and retiring! Respecting the list of compulsory equipment isn't just a constraint: it's your best insurance against missing out on your ultra-trail. By opting for technical, lightweight equipment that's suited to the conditions, you're putting all the chances on your side to get the most out of your adventure.
