Trail running is much more than a sport: it's an immersion in nature, an adventure on unspoilt paths. But our playground is fragile! With the number of trail runners on the rise (nearly 1 million in France), it's essential to adopt environmentally-friendly practices to minimise your impact. So, how can you reconcile your passion for trail running with the need to protect nature? Here are a few good practices to incorporate into your routine as a committed trail runner.
Favours eco-designed equipment
- The textile and sports equipment industry has a significant environmental impact. Fortunately, brands like Raidlight are committed to an eco-responsible approach with :
- Des matières recyclées et durables : privilégie des vêtements en polyester recyclé ou sans PFC, comme le fait Raidlight sur une partie de sa gamme.
- Local production: supporting brands that manufacture in France reduces the carbon footprint associated with transport.
- Repairable and second-hand equipment: think about repairability and trade-in and resale programmes.
Do the right thing on the trails
- Footpaths are not only a place for us to express ourselves, but also for the flora and fauna. A few simple rules to limit your impact:
- Don't leave anything behind: pack your rubbish (gels, energy bars, bottles) and take it to the next bin.
- Stay on the marked paths: avoid cutting through vegetation to preserve the soil and prevent erosion.
- Respect the silence of nature: limiting noise means preserving local wildlife and making the most of the moment.
- Don't disturb animals: during the breeding or hibernation period, some animals are particularly sensitive to human disturbance.
Opt for a more responsible diet
- Your diet needs to be effective, but also respectful of the environment:
- Instead of buying individually wrapped energy gels, try homemade alternatives (fruit purées, DIY energy bars). You can find some recipes here
- Use reusable flasks: say goodbye to plastic bottles and switch to a water bottle or soft flask!
- Eat locally and in season: reducing your carbon footprint also involves choosing what you eat before and after exercise.
- Tip: try putting together a 100% zero-waste refreshment pack for your next race.
Choose eco-responsible events
More and more organisers are adopting sustainable practices:
- Zero waste races: limited distribution of plastic cups, reusable signage.
- Local commitment: support for local producers, post-race reforestation.
- Carbon offsetting: some races plant trees based on the number of participants.
Before registering for a race, check its environmental commitment. Some races, such as the UTMB or the ÉcoTrail de Paris, have some interesting initiatives!
Trail running is an adventure that connects us to nature, and it's up to us to preserve it. By choosing sustainable equipment, doing the right thing and raising awareness, we can all contribute to a more environmentally-friendly trail.
