When they put away their sneakers, you take yours out.

Winter is not a break, it is a season in its own right.

The cold sets in, the trails change, and conditions become more demanding. Running in winter requires suitable gear, capable of protecting you from cold and moisture without compromising lightness or freedom of movement.

Since 2004, with the Raidlight WinterTrail, we have been designing products made to run all year round, even when temperatures drop.

Since 2004, Raidlight has been the organizer of the WinterTrail

Winter isn’t something you watch from afar. You live it since 2004, every year, on the Raidlight Winter Trail in Chartreuse.

Snow, cold, night: we know extreme conditions. We test our gear on our own races. Gloves, beanies, waterproof jackets, crampons: everything is designed so you keep moving forward, even in harsh negative temperatures.

Winter deserves to be run. And Raidlight is here to gear you up.

The 4 challenges of winter trail running

  • RUNNING AT -10°C

The cold grips you from the very first stride. Your fingers go numb. Your body fights to stay warm. If your gear fails, you give up.

The Raidlight solution: Wintertrail shirt (412g), thermal base layer. Ultralight MP+ 25K/50K jacket (175g), highly breathable. Three-layer system suited for extreme cold.

  • PROTECT YOUR EXTREMITIES

Your hands freeze. Your ears burn. Your feet lose sensitivity. The extremities are the first to give in to the cold.

The Raidlight solution: Trail Touch MP+ 10K/10K gloves (35g), waterproof and touchscreen-compatible. Wintertrail beanie Made in France (35g). Technical anti-cold socks.

  • HOLDING ON SNOW AND ICE

The trail is icy. Every step is uncertain. One slip and it's a fall. Traction becomes vital.

The Raidlight solution: Snowline Trail chains (170g), 18-point crampons for deep snow. Snowline City chains (60g) for frozen trails. Guaranteed grip.

  • STAY DRY

It’s snowing. Your jersey is wet. The cold seeps in. Once soaked at -5°C, it’s impossible to warm up.

The Raidlight solution: Top Extreme MP+ 20K/20K jacket (200g), ultra-waterproof. Ultralight MP+ pack (jacket + pants, 280g) for total protection. You stay dry, you keep going.

How to dress for -10°C: the Raidlight thermal strategy

Running in freezing cold is a science. Too many layers = overheating. Not enough = hypothermia. Here’s how to regulate.

PRINCIPLE 1: PROTECT THE EXTREMITIES FIRST
Gloves, hat, technical socks: they give out first. Always cover them, even if you feel warm elsewhere.

PRINCIPLE 2: 3 MODULAR LAYERS
✅ Layer 1 to wick: Seamless or R-Light ML
✅ Layer 2 to insulate: Wintertrail Jersey (412g)
✅ Layer 3 to protect: Ultralight MP+ Jacket or Top Extreme

PRINCIPLE 3: REMOVE BEFORE OVERHEATING
As soon as you start sweating, take off a layer. Sweat + cold = brutal cooling.

THE GEAR FOR WINTER RUNNERS

Here is the gear worn by the finishers of the Raidlight Winter Trail, the SaintéLyon, and winter mountain races. Tested at -15°C.

They ran through the winter with Raidlight

The Wintertrail shirt is my most faithful companion in winter! Very comfortable to wear and warm enough as a second layer down to very low temperatures! It is not bulky, and the thumb hole adds great comfort (for running without gloves or to keep debris from entering through the sleeves). The pocket at the back allows you to carry light items like energy bars!

Antoine Marietta

The Wintertrail tights are perfect from 5°C felt temperature, keep you warm, wick away sweat well, and protect against light rain and wind. They fit snugly while allowing great freedom of movement. The low waist cut, criticized in some reviews, is, in my view, quite comfortable and allows wearing a belt while providing easy access to the pockets. I particularly appreciate the zippers at the bottom of the legs and the presence of non-slip bands on the thighs, which are useful on steep climbs. Perfectly suited for trail running in autumn and winter conditions, I recommend them!

Thibault

I was able to test the WinterTrail shirt during the 2023 SaintéLyon, which was freezing. Honestly, it was perfect combined with a breathable base layer (also from RaidLight), and over that a waterproof layer; I did not feel cold during the race. The small side pocket allows you to put bars or your phone, and it is more than handy. Extra praise for the fleece sleeves that can be pulled over the hands, a truly brilliant idea, especially when you have the good sense to lose one of your gloves in the bustle of a refreshment stop at 4 a.m.

Stone dP

Light and warm, the Light Down jacket is very well cut. It can be worn over a fleece in cold weather. With large pockets and lightweight, I wear it before and after races. And also off the trail without any problem.

Valéry

I am 1.70 m tall and weigh 67 kg, and I chose the Wintertrail Shirt in size M. It is perfect for running without a base layer when temperatures are between 5° and 10° without wind; even in light rain, you stay warm! The shirt dries quickly when hung up.

Benoit F

FROM NOW ON, YOU ARE READY TO RUN IN WINTER.

Gear up like the finishers of the Raidlight Winter Trail and the SaintéLyon. Warm, lightweight, waterproof. Tested in extreme conditions in the Alps.

FAQ

Your questions about winter gear

When to use crampons?

Ice-covered terrain or groomed trail = Snowline City Chains (60g), light grip.

Deep snow or technical snowy singletrack = Snowline Trail Chains (170g), 18 spikes. Fixed crampons are forbidden in races. Chains are removable and legal.

How to protect my hands at -10°C?

2 options:

  • Trail Touch MP+ 10K/10K Gloves (35g): waterproof, touchscreen-compatible, perfect for -5°C to -10°C.
  • Ultralight MP+ 20K/20K Mittens (20g): ultra-light over-gloves to put on if your hands freeze.

Always start with gloves on from the beginning, even if you feel warm.

Do you need a waterproof jacket for winter trail running?

Yes, always. Snow wets just as much as rain. And once soaked at -5°C, there's no way to warm up.

Ultralight MP+ 25K/50K Jacket (175g) or Top Extreme MP+ 20K/20K (200g): ultra-waterproof, ultra-breathable.

Can you run safely at -15°C?

Yes, as long as you're perfectly equipped:

✅ 3 thermal layers (wick away, insulate, protect)

✅ Gloves + beanie + technical socks

✅ Breathable waterproof jacket

Below -15°C, risk of frostbite on extremities. Always pay attention to your sensations.
